Summary

I believe that "Teachers" are the "gate keepers" of the future. It is in this book that I give homage to my first and most influential teacher, my mother - Missionary Gladys Holmes. She takes the role of Great Grandma Gladys, who serves as a guide on a journey of spiritual and cultural enlightenment. Great Grandma Gladys uses her inspired wisdom to pass down valuable lessons to her great grandsons. In order to be an excellent teacher, one must be clever and innovative. Great Grandma Gladys exemplifies these traits. This story is about faith, family values/traditions, and the preservation of history. This story is about the values and traditions that defines the spirituality of the Gullah-Geechee people. This story is about educating our children, not only in the month of February about the great contributions made by African-Americans, but throughout the year. Our history is not an isolated one. Our history is an intricate part of this society that is woven through every aspect of it. It is a must that our history be remembered, explored, and passed down form one generation to the another. I have intertwined my experiences as an Educator with that of my mother. She was the spiritual leader of our family. I was taught to be a thinker and to seek answers from the source of all 'truths." I was taught that the greatest gift one can give to a child is to teach him/her to pray and to stay connected to the "Creator." This is not just a story for children. I can assure you that many adults ask themselves the same questions as the young boys in this story. Many will read this story and say, "yes," I remember this." Some will read and say, "I didn't know this." the information is historically accurate. The prayer house and that beautiful oak tree still stand in our yard. The places visited are actual places in Beaufort. So, read, remember, and enjoy.
