Summary
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A selection of the best works of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, compiled by Luna Miguel.
But take courage, heart:
because in such sweet torment,
whatever my fate,
I will never stop professing my love.
Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is one of the most esteemed poets in the Spanish language. Writing at the peak of the Mexican Baroque, she is a figure with immense appeal: woman, nun, scholar, and defender of the female intellect. Like other celebrated authors, however, she is a victim of her fame. Everyone has heard of her, but very few have read her works.
This anthology, curated by fellow poet Luna Miguel, aims to give a wider audience an appreciation of this brilliant author, persecuted in her time for devoting herself body and soul more to intellectual pursuits than to her religion. Here, modern readers will discover the insights and challenges posed by Sor Juana’s timeless verses.
